I used to hunt and have killed quite a few deer. There was great excitement in waiting and shooting. There was beauty1 in the woods, too, especially late in the fall2. I went hunting in winter as well3.
One cold morning in winter, I went alone to a hillside4. I carfled my gun, a thermos5 flask6 of hot coffee, and three thick sandwiches7.
I found a natural hiding-place, cleared the snow and settled down8. It was pretty cold, but I had warm clothing on. I sat there waiting for about an hour. Nothing showed. I ate two sandwiches and drank a little coffee. The place was really quiet.
Suddenly, A big beautiful buck9 appeared less than 20 feet away from me. There was no cover near to him. Surely I couldn"t miss.
The fact that I couldn"t miss made me wait for him to realize I was there, I waited for him to run with a start10.
To my surprise, he came toward me! He was curious11, I suppose, or maybe he was stupid. For this was no youngster12, but a fully grown-up one. He must have known about men and their guns. But this buck came closer, and I still waited. He kept putting one foot before the other. His big eyes never moved from my face. His wonderful head with a set of antlers13 was clearly in sight14.
I was getting a bit nervous15 now. A big buck can do a lot of damage16. Well, he walked right up to where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me!
What happened next is hard to believe. But it all seemed quite natural. I reached up17 and scratched18 his head right between the antlers. And he liked it. That big, wild, beautiful buck bent19 his head. He practically20 asked for more!
I scratched and stroked21 his head and body. His nose touched my shoulder. I fed him my last sandwich.
Well, he finally went his way, down the hill. Shoot him? Not me. You wouldn"t have either, not after that. I just watched him go—— a strong buck carrying a proud head.
I picked up my thermos flask and gun, and started walking back. Suddenly, I heard the shots —— two of them. If you"ve hunted much you know two shots, one after the other, which mean a kill. I had forgotten that there were other hunters around.
You will understand why I gave up hunting from that day on.

Beauty or none, there is much to be said for a London fog. It gives us all that"change" which we are always needing. When our world is all but invisible, and growing visible bit by bit looks utterly different from its accustomed self, the stupidest of us all can hardly fail to observe a change for our eyes at least as great as there would have been in going to Glasgow. When, arriving at one"s house or one"s club; that monotonous diurnal incident seems an almost incredible feat, accomplished with profound relief and gratitude for a safe deliverance, one has at least an unaccustomed sensation. One is not a man going into his club, but a mariner saved from shipwreck at the last gasp, to be greeted with emotion by erst indifferent waiters. Yes, a fog gives Londoners a more thorough change than going to the Riviera to avoid it. Then it brings out the kindness and cheerfulness, which are their prime claim to honour, into strong relief. True, it also throws into relief the incomparable egoism of the prosperous among them. People with no serious cares or worries in the world of course bemoan and upbraid this trifling inconvenience. But the working, struggling Londoners, cabmen and busmen, you and I, display our indomitable good-humour to advantage. I stayed on top of a bus for half an hour in the block on Monday at Hyde Park Corner and talked with the driver. People are often disappointed in a bus-driver because they expect a wit and a pretty swearer. They find neither, but they find an overworked man of extraordinary cheerfulness, responsive, ready to laugh. He is master of his business —a fact emphasised by the fog—to a degree refreshing to one whose experience of men professing some practical calling is that the great majority, some from mere stupidity, some from over-hasty enthusiasm, are quite incompetent. When finally I left him, his mate piloted me through wheels and horses to the pavement, and I felt I had been among folk who deserve to live. On Sunday night I walked a mile to my abode, and made a point of asking my whereabouts of every one I met. Not one churlish or even hurried answer: politeness, jokes, reminiscences, laughter. We are a kindly people, and it is worth a fog to know it. Another pleasure of a fog is a mild but extended form of the pleasure we feel when we hear that a millionaire has broken his leg. The too fortunate are suffering a discontent health cannot remove. There was in that block a fat brougham containing an important-looking old man who foamed at the mouth, and one reflected that there was a temporary equality of fortunes.
Such are the pleasures we may take in a London fog.

"No, son, for the last time! I"m not going to teach you to drive."Pete Cooper and his father were driving to the city. Pete"s father was talking. "And I won"t let you get a driver"s license1.Boys your age just can"t handle a big car!" Pete"s heart sank.He could tell his father meant2 what he said. He had to keep trying, though. "But, Dad," he began3, "I keep trying to tell you. You don"t have to teach me.I know how to drive, just give me a chance to show you……"
"Never mind," his father broke in, his voice was sharp. "I don"t want to hear any more. You can"t drive. You"re not going to get a license. That"s all there is to it!" then in a softer voice, "Try to understand, son. It"s for your own good.We don"t want anything to happen to you. You"ll have plenty of time to drive when you are older."
Pete slid down in the seat and looked out the window. He was too big to cry ,but just the same his eyes did smart4 a little. He was thinking about the summer. He knew it was no use to try to tell his dad about the hours and hours he had spent driving his cousin Joe"s old car during the long vacation5. He had even driven on the highway many times. Some of the older boys around home had let him drive, too. Everyone said he was a good driver. Everyone except his own father. And his father wouldn"t even listen.
By this time they were in the busy part of the town. Mr. Cooper drove carefully through the heavy traffic. When they got to the bank there was a solid line of cars at the curb6. There was no place to park. Mr. Cooper was in hurry. He double-parked7 and left the motor running. "I"ll only be a minute," he said as he got out. "You sit in the car, and if anyone says anything, tell him I"ll be right back." Pete slid over to the driver"s side. With his hands on the wheels, he pretended to be driving.
The sudden roar of a motor brought him back to earth9. A powerful red sedan shot past so fast and close it made Pete duck a little. At the same moment the door on the other side was jerked10 open. A big policeman jumped into the seat beside Pete and shouted. "follow that car!"
The red sedan was halfway down the block and gaining speed. There was no time for questions.Pete didn"t have time to think. With a quick look behind he slammed the car into gear11 and shoved12 the gas pedal to the floor. As he spun the wheel, the car shot through the line of traffic into the center lane.
Pete"s eyes saw everything at once. the racing red sedan ahead—other traffic both ways—the stop lights13. Other cars were getting out of the way of the reckless14 driver ahead. This was a break for Pete. It was like a football player clearing the way for the man carrying the ball.
At the next light the red sedan squeezed15 through on a yellow signal. The light flashed red for Pete.A tired old car poked its nose out of the side street. It rolled slowly to the middle of the crossroad. When the driver saw Pete coming,he froze. The old car stopped directly in his path.It looked like a sure crash.Pete kicked the brake and twisted the wheel as hard as he dared.Tires screamed as Pete"s car skidded16 around the old crate17.For a second Pete thought they were going over. The inside wheels almost lifted off the road.As he gave it the gas the wheels took hold and the car straightened up.

  不埋怨水的寒冷,只感激水的澄清给了悠翔浅底的机会,是鱼儿的从容;
  不担心天空的阴晴无常,只接受蓝天的广阔给了搏击长空的挑战,是苍鹰的从容;
