"Life lies in quietude," the old monk whispered.
"Quietude is idleness!" the athlete said plausibly.
"Movement is fickleness!" the old monk didn"t give in.
"Quietude is a pool of backwater!" "Movement is a gust of dark wind!"
For the essence of life, the two of them argued heatedly among themselves. So far each of them sticks to his own version, unable to convince the other of accepting the definition of life.
In fact, they may completely think from the angle of the other and completely abandon the dispute, for life not only lies in movement, but also quietude.
A flower in silent bloom is a kind of beauty, so is a bird in swift flight.

  1. It is influencing your worldview. Anybody who has ever been a policeman, a lawyer, a psychiatrist, an ER doctor, or an FBI agent will attest to the truth that television does not accurately portray their life. In almost all aspects, television rarely depicts the world and life accurately. Too much television results in disillusionment about what to expect from the world around us. This can most commonly be seen in people"s expectations of love, romance, and sexuality.
  2. It is influencing your spending habits. If you think you are immune (or too smart) to be influenced by the power of advertisements, you are wrong. Corporations do not spend trillions of dollars in advertising hoping to influence you. They spend trillions of dollars because they know they will influence you.
  3. It is taking you away from the real people all around you. The characters on television are not real. They are thought up in an office building and given life on a piece of paper. In contrast, you are surrounded everyday by real people living real lives. These real people are facing real problems. They need you. And you need them.
  4. It is robbing you of precious mental energy. When your television is on, your concentration is held hostage. Your mental energy is drawn into the screen and your ability to control it is given up.
  5. It is costing you money. Americans spend over $6 billion per year just paying for the electricity to power their television sets. Add in the cost of cable/satellite bills, dvd"s, movie subscriptions, peripherals … and we’re starting to talk about real money.
  6. It impairs your capacity for rational thought.TV oversimplifies reality. It presents subjects in a matter of minutes and everything is nicely wrapped up at the end. This harms clear thinking by conditioning you to expect that most problems have a simple, clear solution that can be implemented in 60 minutes or less.
  7. It is bad for your health. Numerous studies (and common sense) draw direct parallels between excessive television watching and obesity.
  8. It results in less satisfaction with life. According to the Journal of Economic Psychology, TV viewers report lower life satisfaction, higher material aspirations, and more anxiety.
  9. It results in less sex. Couples who keep a TV in the bedroom have sex half as often as those who don"t. And if you ask me, that should be reason enough…
  10. Its opportunity cost is too great. The average American watched an average of 5.1 hours of television per day in 2009. That"s time you could have spent exercising, eating a meal together, entertaining, enjoying nature, meditating, enjoying a hobby, reading a book, or fulfilling a dream.

There was once a king of Scotland whose name was Robert Bruce. He had need to be both brave and wise, for the times in which he lived were wild and rude. The King of England was at war with him, and had led a great army into Scotland to drive him out of the land.
Battle after battle had been fought. Six times had Bruce led his brave little army against his foes1; and six times had his men been beaten, and driven into flight. At last his army was scattered2, and he was forced to hide himself in the woods and in lonely places among the mountains.
One rainy day, Bruce lay on the ground under a rude shed3 , listening to the sweet patter4 of the drops on the roof above him. He was tired and sick at heart, and ready to give up all hope. It seemed to him that there was no use for him to try to do anything more.
As he lay thinking, he saw a spider over his head, making ready to weave5 her web. He watched her as she toiled6 slowly and with great care. Six times she tried to throw her frail7 thread from one beam to another, and six times it fell short.
"Poor thing!" said Bruce: "you, too, know what it is to fail."
But the spider did not lose hope with the sixth failure. With still more care, she made ready to try for the seventh time. Bruce almost forgot his own troubles as he watched her swing8 herself out upon the slender9 line. Would she fail again? No! A little while, the thread was carried safely to the beam, and fastened there.
"I, too, should have tried again. I will try a seventh time!" cried Bruce.
He arose and called his men together. He told them of his plans, and sent them out with messages of cheer to his disheartened people. Soon there was anarmy of brave Scotchmen around him. Another battle was fought, and the King of England was glad to go back into his own country.
I have heard it said, that, after that day, no one by the name of Bruce would ever hurt a spider. The lesson which the little creature had taught the king was never forgotten.

"Long" and "Shu" are both names of ancient places. ( "Long", present-day the east of Gansu Province; "Shu", present-day the mid-west of Sichuan Province)
According to History of Later Han · The Life of Cen Peng recorded, in the former years of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Kui Xiao occupied the place of Longxi and Gongsun Shu occupied the place of Shu, each dominating a region.
After Emperor Guangwu--Liu Xiu controlled the east area and then advancing to the west, he offered Cen Peng as a chief general, with his assistant general, Wu Han to beset Kui Xiao in the Longxi. When Gongsun Shu heard it, he sent troops to help Kui at once.
At that time Gongsun Shu"s troops were at Shang Gui. Liu Xiu sent troops to pin down there and wrote a letter to Cen Peng: "If the two cities were taken, you should lead the troops to attack Shu. A man"s desire is very hard to satisfy, so after capturing Long, I would wish to take Shu."
Before long Kui Xiao and Gongsun Shu were wiped up and Liu Xiu realized his intention of reunifying the country.
From this historical story comes the idiom:" De Long Wang Shu"--covet Shu after getting Long.
Now we use it as a metaphor to indicate that people are insatiably greedy and the more they get, the more they want to have.

Mr Jones had a farm outside the town. His wife was often ill and his children were young. So he couldn"t look after it by himself. He employed(雇)Jack and Harry as workers. He tried to pay them less though they worked hard. The food for the two young men was bad and they lived in a short and wet house on the farm. They tried to find a way to make reprisals(报fu).
